To establish a valid link in all computer programs in different clinical departments, a â€Å"local area network (LAN)† must be installed in each computers, or â€Å"wide area networking (WAN)† in multiple site connections, uniting strategic users (billing/accounting, administrative and recording sectors) who require copies of basic and/or patient information (Walker, Bieber, & Richards, 2006). As the structural side of EHR have been explained, it is important to note that the internal flow of organization management is also a critical point in the success of the whole system. In Figure 2 (please see Appendix B) a sample of customized work flow of organization communication and function of both health care and IT teams involved in the system of electronic recording are presented. Basing from the diagram, one can surmise that the simple arrival of a clients for a check-up requires an extensive flow of functional work. In the absence of a systematized work flow structure, the whole organization may face delays as information storage and retrieval are backlogged by inappropriate system of recording. The large volume of data stored through EHR makes it an ideal system for promoting an intensive communication pattern that is both comprehensive and accurate in form. As unique identifiers, this type of system has been largely encouraged in first world countries due to its unique characteristics. It is an identification medium that can easily be accessed from internal and external data systems, efficiently discriminating between similar demographic information from potential receptors of health care (Cunningham, n.d.). The idea of storing bulk of information starting from birth to the dying moments is essential in order to trace how individuals maintain their well-being during their whole life. I think that description and detail are one of the most important elements in writing an essay. If you have good description and supporting details you will develop and present a word picture for your reader. This makes for a far more interesting story. He told the story three times with all different details leading up to the same ending. He wrote it so that the stabbing was clear and you could picture Catherine Genovese laying there at her apartment doorway, At the second door, 82-62 Austin Street, he saw her slumped on the floor at the foot of the stairs. (Pg. 99)? If you don?t have a good thesis your paper will not have structure. A thesis is always more than a title; it is an announcement of your intent or statement of fact. Finally, it will be shown how the medieval concept of the goblin, the fairy trickster, will resurface after a hundred years of exile in the form of the gremlin. The goblin as a fairy has its roots mainly in Britain, although they had counterparts in most of Europe. The French had goeblins, the Germans kobolds, the Welsh pwca (pooka), and even the Japanese had the tengu. However, the name ‘goblin’ is attributed to an Italian origin. The story goes that in Florence there were two infamous houses, the Guelfs and the Gibelins. So malicious were the members of these families that mothers would warn unruly children that the Guelfs and the Gibelins would come to get them if they did not behave. Thus the modern words ‘elves’ and ‘goblins’ were born. (Latham, p. 48) The fairy goblin ranged in disposition from the truly sinister to the near-harmless trickster. An example of the nastier medieval goblins is the legend of Redcap, a vicious goblin who inhabited a deserted castle. Street Crime

Street crimes are commonplace in Pakistan. Almost everyone has a story to tell about having a purse or a wallet stolen; everyday street crimes appear in the news headlines. They usually only occur in the big cities, where there are homeless street-people. An analysis of the official data compiled by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reveals that, on an average, 124 mobile phones are snatched/stolen every day. In the preceding year, the figure had stood at 76.The growing trend of cellphone snatching and theft in Karachi reflects the failure of the police in containing the crime. Despite the IMEI mechanism having been activated to get the handsets jammed by the concerned cellular companies, there has been a little or no improvement in the overall situation. The major causes are unemployment and illiteracy but there are some other factors too like lawlessness, fundamentalism, backwardness and double standards prevailing in the society.The government should take steps to contr ol these street crimes in Pakistan to make Pakistan a peaceful country – STREET CRIME the increase of street crimes. Daily we hear of murders, robberies and rapes. These are categorized as â€Å"street crimes†. Some crimes are senseless and preventable. Mobile phone snatching, car (autos) snatching on gun point, purse snatching from women and target killing are also street crimes that are newly introduced.The main reasons of these crimes are unemployment, illiteracy, poverty and inability of the institutions, responsible to maintain law and order. Government must take preventive measures as early as possible otherwise they will take the whole society in grip of street crimes. In the first instance, sincere steps must be taken to solve the unemployment problem,. Existing education system provide incentives to poor people and training of police department on modern scientific lines.

Schmidt. Net als elk meisje was ik ook dol op sprookjes. Mijn moeder heeft me verteld dat ik altijd wilde dat ze Roodkapje voorlas, maar zelf kan ik me daar niks van herinneren. Van Max Velthuis las mijn moeder ook verschillende boekjes voor en later kon begon ik ze zelf te lezen als oefening. Een aantal van deze boekjes waren Olifant en de tijdmachineâ„ ¢, Kikker is een heldâ„ ¢ en Kikker en de vreemdelingâ„ ¢. Ik vond het prachtig dat een kikker kon praten en allerlei dingen kon doen die mensen ook deden. Toen ik op de basisschool zat las ik erg veel boeken van Annie M.G. Schmidt en Roald Dahl. Ook heb ik Het grote boek van Madeliefâ„ ¢ gelezen. In dat boek stonden alle verhalen van Madelief. Zoals Met de poppen gooienâ„ ¢, Grote mensen daar kan je beter soep van kokenâ„ ¢, Op je kop in de prullenbakâ„ ¢, Krassen in het tafelbladâ„ ¢ en Een hoofd vol macaroniâ„ ¢. Ook heb ik van Guus Kuijer Ik ben Polleke hoorâ„ ¢ en De tranen knallen uit mijn kopâ„ ¢ gelezen. Het leuke van de boeken van Guus Kuijer vond ik dat de hoofdpersonen altijd ontdeugend waren en deden wat ze zelf wilden. In de boeken van Annie M.G. Schmidt echter waren de hoofdpersonen vaak verlegen en hadden het allemaal niet zo goed in het leven. Een voorbeeld daarvan is Sjakie en de Chocoladefabriekâ„ ¢. Sjakie en zijn familie zijn bijvoorbeeld heel arm. Zo is Pluk in het boek Pluk en de Pettefletâ„ ¢ een jongetje dat helemaal alleen in een flatgebouw woont. En Lotje, die woont helemaal alleen met haar vader in een caravan! Andere boeken die ik van Annie M.G. Schmidt gelezen heb zijn Wiplalaâ„ ¢ en Wiplala weerâ„ ¢. Nog zoâ„ ¢n idee! Hoe verzin je het om een verhaal te schrijven over een tuinkabouter Het idee alleen al vond ik prachtig. De boeken die ik minder leuk vond waren de lijsters. Onder andere omdat we die in groepjes moesten lezen en de andere kinderen lazen te langzaam, naar mijn mening dan. De lijsters kon je ook zelf bestellen en dat vond ik weer wel leuk. Dan kon in tenminste in mijn eigen tempo, veel sneller dan al die andere kinderen in mijn klas natuurlijk, het boekje uitlezen. Het enige wat ik daar vervelend van vond, was dat die boekjes zo snel uit waren. Binnen een dag vaak. Alleen hoe ouder je werd, hoe dikker die boekjes werden en er was een serie lijsters â€Å" de Gouden Lijstersâ„ ¢ â€Å" die wel superleuk was. Hier hoorde onder andere het boek De Zevensprongâ„ ¢ van Tonke Dragt bij. Op de basisschool vond ik het altijd heel belangrijk dat er een heleboel tekeningen bij zaten, anders wist ik niet hoe de hoofdpersonen eruitzagen. Ik lees nu veel liever boeken zonder veel plaatjes, zodat ik het uiterlijk van de hoofdpersonen zelf kan verzinnen. Helaas word ik daardoor vaak teleurgesteld als ik de verfilming van het boek zie. Harry Potter bijvoorbeeld was in mijn gedachten veel leuker dan in de film. Ik vond het ook altijd prachtig als twee mensen op elkaar verliefd werden, wat ze zelf in het begin nog niet wisten, maar ik als lezer natuurlijk allang doorhad. Toen vond ik het nog heel erg leuk dat ik altijd precies wist hoe een boek af zou lopen. En natuurlijk moest het altijd een happy endingâ„ ¢ hebben, anders was het een stom boek. Nu hoeft niet elk boek een en zij leefden nog lang en gelukkigâ„ ¢-einde te hebben. Een einde waarbij de hoofdpersonen niet bij elkaar kunnen zijn, kan ook mooi zijn. Wel heb ik er een hekel aan als een boek een open einde heeft. Daar kan ik helemaal niet tegen. Dan moet ik zelf een einde gaan verzinnen, terwijl ik dan net zo goed zelf een heel boek zou kunnen gaan schrijven. Ook heb ik het gevoel dat de laatste bladzijde van een boek ook echt het einde van het verhaal moet zijn. Tenzij er natuurlijk een vervolg komt. In groep zeven en acht las ik nog steeds boeken met een happy endâ„ ¢. Zoals de boeken Razendâ„ ¢, Pijnstillersâ„ ¢ en Afblijvenâ„ ¢ van Carry Slee. Nu heb ik eindelijk door dat de boeken van Carry Slee grotendeels hetzelfde zijn. Zo zat er altijd een moraal in het verhaal, heel erg vervelend. Ik lees een boek toch voor mijn plezier Dan hoeft er van mij geen wijze les in te zitten. Andere boeken die ik in groep acht al las waren de boeken van Francine Oomen. Die waren natuurlijk heel aantrekkelijk om te lezen. Vooral als je vooraan in de rij staat om naar de brugklas te gaan en de titel van het boek Hoe overleef ik de brugklasâ„ ¢ is. Ook las ik een heleboel typische meidenboeken, onder andere van Kate Cann. Vrijâ„ ¢, Siestaâ„ ¢ en Party!â„ ¢ zijn alle drie boeken die gaan over meisjes met liefdesproblemen en uiteindelijk komt alles natuurlijk weer goed. Kate Cann is eigenlijk de Engelse versie van Carry Slee. Boeken die ik las en nog steeds lees, zijn de boeken van Thea Beckman. Het idee dat er in haar boeken een heleboel geschiedenisfeiten staan, trekt mij heel erg aan. Haar boeken maken het hele vak geschiedenis leuk. Andere boeken die zich ook in de geschiedenis afspelen zijn de boeken van Karl May. Zijn verhalen spelen zich af in de 19e eeuw. Al zijn boeken gaan over de in Amerika bekende westman Old Shatterhand en de indiaan Winnetou. Alleen wordt Old Shatterhand na de dood van Winnetou in de Orient bekend als Kara Ben Nemsi, samen met zijn reisgenoot Hadji Halef Omar. Twee jaar geleden ben ik begonnen met het uitspitten van mijn moeders boekenkast. Daarin vond ik het De Da Vinci codeâ„ ¢ en Het Bernini Mysterieâ„ ¢ van Dan Brown. Wat ik leuk vond aan die boeken was de onverwachte wending in het hele verhaal. Als je denkt te weten wat er precies aan de hand is, blijkt het uiteindelijk heel anders te lopen. Ook was het leuk om te lezen doordat je weet dat het een mengeling van feiten en fictie is. In Het Bernini Mysterieâ„ ¢ bijvoorbeeld kom je een heleboel te weten over hoe alles eraan toe gaat tijdens het kiezen van een nieuwe Paus. Ook heb ik boeken van Robert van Gulik gelezen. Zijn boeken gaan over Rechter Tie, een rechter die in China gewoond heeft en daar ook echt al deze moorden heeft opgelost. De boeken van Robert van Gulik zijn niet van die romannetjes die je binnen een dag uit hebt, al doet het aantal bladzijdes je dat wel vermoeden. Voor de rest heb ik een aantal boeken van John Grisham gelezen zoals De Clientâ„ ¢, De Advocaat van de Duivelâ„ ¢ en Achter gesloten deurenâ„ ¢. Onder andere omdat advocaten en maffia in zijn boeken heel belangrijk zijn. Ik wilde later advocaat worden en daarom heb ik zijn boeken gelezen. Ik vond dat ze de moeite waard waren. Een ander boek waarin de maffia een grote rol speelt, is het boek The Godfatherâ„ ¢. Ik vond het een fantastisch boek. Door de manier waarop Mario Puzo de gedachten en gevoelens van de hoofdpersonen beschrijft, lijken ze echt te gaan leven. Hij laat je de wereld vanuit hun perspectief zien. Een boekenwurm als ik komt natuurlijk ook minstens drie keer per maand in de bibliotheek. Ik heb uit de bibliotheek onder andere Stad van de maskersâ„ ¢, Stad van de bloemenâ„ ¢ en Stad van de sterrenâ„ ¢ gelezen. Dit zijn 100% fantasieboeken. Sommige boeken waarin twee werelden samen komen zijn heel chaotisch geschreven en dan raak je alleen maar in de war. Bij deze serie is het allemaal heel logisch. Dat is eigenlijk ook zo in Het Gouden Kompasâ„ ¢. Zoals ik al eerder geschreven had, vind ik dat boeken met een einde waarin de hoofdpersonen niet bij elkaar kunnen zijn ook erg mooi. Daarvan is Het Gouden Kompasâ„ ¢ een voorbeeld. w Boeken die ik vrij recent heb gelezen zijn Het huis van de geestenâ„ ¢ van Isabel Allende en de serie De Aardkinderenâ„ ¢. Wat ik mooi vind aan de boeken van Isabel Allende is dat je de personages leert kennen en ze hebben elk iets wat ze uniek maakt. De Stam van de Holebeerâ„ ¢ vond ik een prachtig boek. Daar zijn een aantal redenen voor. Ten eerste zijn de personages en hun gevoelens zo goed beschreven dat je hun beslissingen in het leven voor de volle honderd procent begrijpt. Ten tweede het idee dat Jean M. Auel drie jaar in het bestuderen van de feiten heeft gestopt om het verhaal zo waarheidsgetrouw mogelijk te maken. Een minpuntje aan het boek, en eigenlijk de hele serie, was dat er veel seks in zat. Mijn naam is Hannahâ„ ¢ daarentegen viel heel erg tegen. De achterkant van het boek laat je denken dat het leven van een vrouw totaal verandert doordat ze een achtergelaten kind meeneemt. Maar na het eerste hoofdstuk heb je direct door dat die vrouw veel meer bezig is met het vinden van haar Romeo dan met het verzorgen van Hannah. Ondanks al dat vind ik het heel moeilijk om een boek halverwege weg te leggen. Als ik dat doe blijft de vraag wat er verder kan gebeuren in mijn hoofd rondspoken en daar kan ik niet tegen. Na dit allemaal geschreven te hebben kom ik tot de conclusie dat mijn smaak qua boeken erg veranderd is. Ik zal niet meer boeken zoals Wiplalaâ„ ¢ gaan lezen. Ik vind het nu veel belangrijker dat boeken echt ergens over gaan en dat er ook fictie in zit. Ik lees namelijk om te kunnen wegdromen in een andere wereld en voor de ontspanning en als er dan alleen maar feiten in een boek staan is het net alsof ik een schoolboek lees. Dus ik ben van plan om nog een heleboel boeken te gaan lezen in mijn verdere leven. Eerst nog fantasie- en geschiedenisboeken, maar later zal mijn smaak qua boeken waarschijnlijk nog verder ontwikkelen en ik sta daarom ook open voor allerlei soorten boeken. Verder heb ik nog lang niet alle boeken uit mijn moeders boekenkast gelezen, dus ik ben nog wel even zoet.

The process of reading the book in itself was an emotionally draining one as the fates of Dorothy Parker and the other characters in the novel seemed to unfold in front of my eyes. The sheer size of the novel and t he networks that it created was mind-boggling. Apart from this, it was also interesting to read of the ways in which the lives of different members of a society were interconnected and vital for the progress of another one. The process of reading the book also opened up many avenues through which to analyse the position of women even in contemporary society. This was thus, a profoundly unsettling experience. It was also, however, an experience that taught me to value the position of literature in the world. Following the process of reading the book, I was better informed regarding Victorian society and its culture. Apart from this, the intense positivity that comes from the climax of the novel stayed with me beyond the time that I was actually reading the novel. This event remains one that shaped the way I write poetry and prose. I have incorporated elements of the social realist style in my narratives. Also, the focus on women-centric issues is also something that I have tried to i nclude in my writing. It was intrinsically connected to the society from which it emerged. Juror three is a very outward with his opinion from the beginning. He lets everyone know what he thinks and that no one will be able to change his mind. In his mind his opinion is the most important thing and no one can say anything against it. When others try to look at all the facts and have a discussion he finds that it is pointless and a waste of his time because he will not change his vote from guilty and that means everyone else must be the ones to agree with him. He will snap at any moment when someone else is trying to share their opinion just because they say something that doesn’t support what he thinks. His anger plays a large part in developing him as a character. There are many jurors that don’t want to deal with him and are scared to speak up to say what they think because there is no telling the next time number three will start to yell at them. The other characters see him as an angry man who is too stubborn to listen to what anyone else has to say. In this book juror three often explodes into extremely loud yelling while everyone else is trying to keep calm and decide on a fair verdict on the case. At one point during the story juror number eight is trying to calmly explain the facts and evidence that proves juror threes opinion wrong and instead of calmly listening like everyone else he tries to attack juror eight; having to be held back by three of the oher men. This shows a lot about his character as a man. He is a loud man set in his ways that has lived with one opinion on the situation nd isnt willing to change it. The boy who is being charged with allegedly killing his father is black and that causes a lot of mixed opinions within the jury room. Juror three doesn’t seem to like anyone who is black or from a certain area of town which is not the best. There is a larhe amount of prejudice in this book not only from juror three,  and it seems to alter a lot of the thoughts of some of the jurors. The way that he tries to influence people to be on his side is not very effective at all, no one wants to listen to him because all he does is yell and scream at them without backing up what hes saying with any facts. Juror number eight also has a set opinion from the beginning of the story but he has a completely different way of approaching things. He is very quiet and keeps his thoughts to himself at the beginning. When it gets to talking about facts and evidence he has a lot to say but doesn’t try and force the other jurors to agree with him. He only wants to fully discuss all of the information that has been presented to try and determine what the fair verdict should be. At first I don’t think he was even 100% sure that he wanted to vote not guilty he did it mostly because a boys life is at atake and he couldn’t let that go without talking about it. Juror eight is a calm man who is very nice and tries his best to state what he thinks is right but not do it in a forceful way. He isnt saying that there is only his opinion on the case but he also doesn’t say that what anyone else thinks is wrong. This man wanted only to try and come to find the truth instead of just saying that the boy is guilty without full examining everything. Juror eight took the time to look at the facts and put personal opinions aside which is the compete opposite of what juror number three did. The way that he stayed very calm even when everyone else was yelling at each other is one thing that I think really helped influence othe r jurors to change their vote. Even after jjuror wight said only a few things they tooka asecond vote and he already had convinced someone to agree with his view on the case. The way he could calmly debate what everyone else was gettinginto large arguments about without changing from the very calm and not outspoken person that he is was a large factor in amking other people change their vote. He brought up very valid points that no one else would have thought twice about without him. By keeping his personal feelings on the boys race etc he was able to come up with a better end result than that of everyone else. He is a very influencial man who was really only looking for the truth in a case that is made up of a lot of lies and exxagerations. Juror eight and juror three might seem like complete opposites who could never be thought of as having some things alike. This though is not completely true. Yes, they have very different personalities and ways of going about explaining their  opinions but there is some similarity. They both have aclear stance on whether or not they think the boy is guilty. Also they both want to convince the rest of the jury that their opinion is right. Even through all the arguments and yelling that was done they do have a couple of things that are similar between them. The way that everyone in this book especially juror eight debated his point shows how someone who is determined and who knows what they are saying can convince many to believe their side. Juror eight in the end got everyone to vote not guilty because of the way he went about explaining his point. He didn’t yell and just say that his opinion was right just because he thought so, there was evidence to back it up that no one else would have seen if it weren’t for him.

Clinton's Impeachment A fake. A liar. A cheat. Is this what should be said about the President? He has committed perjury, obstructed justice, and continues to lie to America about his actions. Bill Clinton is an embarrassment to America and should be impeached. How can his actions be explained to the children? Can parents tell their children that the leader of the free world is a liar, a cheat, and a pervert? Impeachment out of office or resignation would be the best for the country. The President has been dodging everything that has been thrown at him, it is about time he is pinned with something and this affair is the best opportunity. Taking him out of office is necessary and this can not be a better time for the impeachment to take place. Through the history of America there have been many impeachments but never a full impeachment for a president. The closest ever was Andrew Jackson who was impeached by the house but not by the senate (O,Brien 973). Clinton went through the same that he did being impeached by the house but not the senate. Andrew Jackson was impeached for high crimes against the United States. Clinton has committed several high crimes yet he is not going to be impeached. He has been given to many chances and forgiven too many times. A person can only be given so many chances before a stop has to be put on it. This is the best time to stop the lying and cheating going on in the White House. The point that he is the President of the United States should not give the President any leeway whatsoever. The President has engaged in conduct that is against his constitutional duty to execute the laws (Starr). The President committed the crimes and just like any other common criminal he should have to pay for what he has done. If a doctor or a teacher participated in sexual activities with a patient or student would he or she not be forced to resign or be fired? How is the President's case different from this except for the fact that he is the President and he has also committed other crimes besides having sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky? All men are created equal isn't that what the constitution says, why is the Presidents case so different.

Allegory of the Cave Essay

Theme of Freedom, Responsibility & Education in the Allegory of the Cave The myth of the cave is a famous allegory, written by Plato in The Republic. It was written in the form of conversation between Socrates and Glaucon and covers the idea of shadow against light or how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened. The story tells about the cave in which people live from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them and cannot turn their heads. Behind them is a fire which is blazing in a distance. Between people and the fire there is a roadway where puppeteers are carrying all sorts of figures and statues of animals. Prisoners can only see the shadows of these figures and completely unaware that these are only soulless statues. The idea of the cave symbolizes shadow or what we believe to be real, while the sun represents education, enlightenment and truth. Further Socrates tells that if prisoners are released from th eir chains, than they would probably believe that the shadows are more real than what is really produces them. Or in other words if to show the prisoner the statues which are the initial cause of these shadows, than he or she would not know what they are. For him or her, the shadow will be more real than the actual thing. And if one of the prisoners will go out of the cave, then he or she will not be able to distinguish which world is real and which one is unrealistic. Plato depicts the path of teaching as the route to freedom, as a release from those chains which tie human beings to the play of shadows, as the flight from this land of bondage into a shape in which humanity becomes aware both of his previous state of bondage and of the origin of those shadows to which he was before. The main aim of education is to lead mankind into freedom and the core value of education is supported by freedom. Returning back to the cave, released man will have to decide which world to choose as real. Would he or she be happy in comparison to the other prisoners who have not yet seen outside of the cave. And here Socrates clarifies to Glaucon whether he or she will try to free the rest of people and explain them about the world outside. In this situation every human is free to draw their own selections and apply their  own substance for life; nonetheless, the choices men make are what they believe all human beings to do, causing men to be responsible for their activities. All men have a moral responsibility to their fellows. The escaped prisoner is responsible for passing away back and informing the rest of the captives of what he witnessed. He has to explain to them that the ultimate reality is not the phantoms along the rampart, but what is seen once you’re in the light. He then experiences anguish because the prisoners will not trust him. Every man suffers anxiety they have freedom and at the same time bear great amount of responsibility for all people. Therefore every choice that a man makes should be honest and responsible. Connection of freedom and responsibility with education is crucial in the contemporary world. Allegory of the cave is simplified picture of what happens in our society Most of the modern educational institutions do not support freedom. Students can just like the prisoners be affected by the so-called puppeteers with wrong side of the reality. Process writing â€Å"An unjust law is no law at all† All people have equal right, it does not matter what race you are or how old are you or where you are from. All of us should have equal rights. I think that African-Americans should reach for their aim, aim not to be discriminated and to have equal right. That time they had strong desire to live in peace. Martin Luter King is a leader of African-Americans who struggle for African-Americans freedom. He is the great leader, because he want to reach freedom without violence. He was great thinker, because he did not start disorders in country, he just wanted to make economic withdrawal program. It shows that African-Americans had strong desire to be free, and desire to reach it without violence. Equality is not always justice EqualityJustice Equality as shown in the first picture is when all people get strictly the same things, no matter of their needs and possibilities. Equality in my opinion is not perfect, and does not take into consideration different  possibilities of different social classes which lead to the inequality in the society. What is justice? Justice – is a concept of rightness, which is based on ethics, law, religious and other aspects. In my opinion equality is not always justice. Every class of people should separately get help and benefits from government or administration. This picture above very well helps us to realize that justice and equality are different things. Most of us sometimes mix these two words. I also can give another example: Sometimes different organizations support orphans who need additional help from the society. If to equally treat them they will not get equal to other children, who have parents. This is because they will not be able in the same conditions afford parents immediately. While within the concept of justice, these children should get more benefits from government and different social organizations rather than usual children, who get care and support directly from their parents. La Jetee La Jetee is a science fictional movie filmed by Chris Marker in 1962 in France. Compounded almost from photos, it tells us about post 3rd world war and experiments with time travelling. From French La Jetee is translated runway, which is a place where planes take off. In the movie, people who survived after 3rd world war were living under destroyed Paris, and most of them were imprisoned criminals and prisoners of war. Scientists researched injection which could make humans mind to travel in time. They wanted to rescue the present and ask for help from future and past. They found an experimental who could mentally withstand the shock of time travel. Finally they found him, and he was a prisoner. They sent him to the past the his pre-war childhood where he saw a woman and a mystical murder on the observation platform. After several attempts, he could reach different period of his life. There he built a romantic relationship with the woman on the observation platform in his childhood. After this he was sent to the future, where he meet with the highly developed people of the future. They give him a power unit which is able to recreate his destroyed world. After all these, he returned back to his time, where he was sentenced to death. But the people of the future offer him to go with them; he refuses and asks them to send him to the past to his childhood, to meet his beloved woman, on  the observation platform. Finally, when he goes back to that time, to that platform, where he hopes to meet that woman, he will be killed by a person. He realizes that the murder which he saw as a child, was his own murder. What is common between Antigone and Allegory of the cave? These three works can be connected with three ideas. Idea of freedom, honesty and responsibility In both works we can see theme of freedom. It is freedom of choice. In Plato’s Allegory of the cave prisoner who was released have a choice to be enlightened or unenlightened and another choice to run away or to come back and tell every one the truth. In Sophocle’s work Antigone Kreon have a choice to change his law or to punish everyone who will break a law. The theme of honesty also presents here. Antigone was honesty with her king Kreon and tells him everything what she feels. She was against of king’s law because that law was unjust law. We can say that she was agree with St. Augustine’s phrase â€Å"unjust law is not law at all†. In Plato’s work prisoner was, who was released, honesty with his co-prisoners, he does not run away he come back and tell everything what he see outside of the cave. The last theme of our orientation week is responsibility. Prisoner in Plato’s work come back and tell everyone the truth. He want to show them another side of reality, with this action he shows us his responsibility for others â€Å"the truly free individual is the one who is experiencing guilty for everything around him†. And Antigone also was responsible. She brakes a law and bury his brother with all funerals. Employment Law Compliance Plan Essay

I have researched several employment laws for Mr. Stonefield’s Landslide Limousine Company and there are four laws that I will outline for Mr. Stonefield to consider complying with in his new business venture. I will discuss in this memo the Civil Rights Act of 1964 regarding employment discrimination, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 regarding people with disabilities, Equal Pay Act of 1963 regarding wage discrimination between men and women, and lastly the Texas Minimum Wage Act regarding the least amount of an hourly wage payable in the state of Texas. I will give a brief summary of each of the four Acts and consequences for noncompliance. Civil Rights Act of 1964 The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is regulated and enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). As a new business, if you receive any federally funded monies such as grants, assistance, or subsidies The  Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to you. The EEOC â€Å"enforces laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or age in hiring, promoting, firing, setting wages, testing, training, apprenticeship, and all other terms and conditions of employment† (The United States National Archives and Records Administration, n.d., para. 3). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it unlawful for employers to â€Å"fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions or privileges or employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin† (The United States National Archives an d Records Administration, n.d., para. 2). The Civil Rights Act has been expanded to include subsequent legislation. According to the United States Government Manual of 1998-99, â€Å"the EEOC enforces laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or age in hiring, promoting, firing, setting wages, testing, training, apprenticeship, and all other terms and conditions of employment† (The United States National Archives and Records Administration, n.d., para. 3). Protected classes now include race, color, creed, sex, and age. As you can see, the spectrum of inclusion has been increased to protect the employee. Consequences for noncompliance Once a business has been found to be in violation of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 the penalties are substantial. Consequences for violating The Civil Rights Act can result in federal funding can be withdrawn for a specific time or terminated and monetary fines. Marion Shaub, a former Federal Express (FedEx) truck driver, sued her employer after she reported anti-female comments, hostility, and retaliation when she reported the incidents. The EEOC reports â€Å"The jury found Federal Express liable for a sex-based hostile work environment and retaliation and awarded Ms. Shaub $391,400 in back pay and front pay, $350,000 in compensatory damages for emotional pain and distress, and $2.5 million dollars in punitive damages† (United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission [EEOC], 2004, para. 2). Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 â€Å"prohibits discrimination  against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodation, communications, and governmental activities† (United States Department of Labor [DOL], n.d., para. 1). The ADA requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees that have disabilities or may have accessibility requirements to be able to use public accommodations. Under the ADA, disabilities include physical and mental conditions with varying degrees of severity. A few examples are deafness, blindness, missing limbs, epilepsy, cancer, and mental retardation. The Department of Labor provides assistance with the ADA but four federal agencies are responsible for enforcing the ADA. Those four agencies are the EEOC, The Department of Transportation (DOT), The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and The Department of Justice (DOJ). Consequences for noncompliance As with The Civil Rights Act of 1964, withdrawal and termination of federal funds is possible of companies that violate The ADA. One example is Bates v. United Parcel Service (UPS). This particular case brought against UPS brought to issue â€Å"the hearing standard that is part of the DOT physical† (Case Law Find Law, 2015, para. 9). The plaintiffs contended that even with a hearing disability and not passing the DOT hearing test they were still able to operate vehicles that were below the required gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10, 001 pounds. UPS agreed to pay $5.8 million and to create a program that was implemented nationally throughout UPS. Equal Pay Act of 1963 The Equal Pay Act of 1963 states, â€Å"Employers may not pay unequal wages to men and women who perform jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort and responsibility, and that are performed under similar working conditions within the same establishment† (Society for Human Resource Management [SHRM], 2015, para. 2). What this means is that men and women are to be given equal pay for doing the same types of work however, the work does not have to be exactly the same but equal, within the same employer. Skill, effort, responsibility, working conditions, and establishment are factors that employers must keep in mind when paying wages to men and women doing similar jobs in similar work environments. Wage differences can exists when merit, seniority, or any other factor exists as long as it is not a person’s  gender. When there are wage differences the burden of proof falls on the employer to prove why the difference exists. Consequences of noncompliance Corning Glass Works violated the Equal Pay Act by paying male employees who work a night inspection shift a higher wage than females doing the same inspections during the day inspection shift. Corning Glass also tried to correct this by opening up the night inspection shift to women and implemented a unionized shift differential to equalize pay however, employee employed prior to the changes continued to receive higher wages continuing to create a difference in pay. The Secretary of Labor brought the charges against Corning to collect back wages for the women who had been violated. Texas Minimum Wage Act The Texas Minimum Wage Act (TMWA) provides information about rights and duties for both employees and employers. The TMWA establishes the minimum wage at $7.25, requires employers to provide a written statement of an employee’s earnings, outlines provisions for agricultural workers, provides exemptions for different types of employers, and civil penalties for violations. All employers must display the current Texas minimum wage poster in an obstruction free area so that all employees can see what the minimum wage is and their rights as workers in Texas. Recommendations for Compliance In closing, compliance with Federal, State, County, and City laws is strongly recommended. Landslide Limousine Company can be shut down and fined heavily for violations brought by employees. The burden of proof is on you as the employer and understanding all of the laws applicable to your business is necessary. Investigations by any of the federal departments who are responsible for investigating and enforcing the employment laws can tie up your resources for months, possibly years. However, not all judgments go against the employer. My recommendation is to understand the laws, document well, keep pristine records, and do your best to remind within the guidelines for employers. Negative Aspects of the SAT

The SAT requirement should be completely phased out from the college admission. The SAT has been used as the primary means of assessing students. The SAT is commercially published test that contain a number of items and have a uniform procedure for administration and scoring. The problem with the increase in SAT is that the tests present many challenging obstacles for students and teachers. The message being sent to students is that the only thing that matters in their whole educational experience is their test score. Rather than attacking the ‘root problem’ of academic failure, attention is being focused on comparing scores among schools. Fratt (p. 17) found that 62 percent of the states in which the SAT exams have been adopted to assess the students’ abilities have experienced a high and continuously increasing drop out rate. The high-scoring schools become models, and the low-scoring schools are seen failure (). As test scores are relied on for important educational decisions such as college admission, questions need to be raised about the validity of the SAT. Negative Aspects of SAT The SAT provides worthwhile information, but lacks realism and undermines the educational process. The U.S. is the only nation that relies upon SAT for college admission. Countries such as Europe and Asia use essays, oral exams and exhibit of students’ work. These assessment measures tend to measure students’ skills and knowledge in a more meaningful way including high-order thinking and problem-solving skills, whereas the SAT tend to focus on concrete, isolated skills (Black & Duhon, p. 90-98). An assumption of the SAT is that if a student is able to perform a skill in the test, he or she is able to perform that same skill in his or her own work. For example, if a student can perform de-contextualized editing on a SAT exam, he or she will be able to edit his or her own work. The SAT tends to focus on isolated skills, encourage low-level comprehension, rely only on multiple-choice formats, and produce scores at times that are not useful in planning instruction. Students are not involved in their own assessment. Labels may cause educators or parents to inappropriately alter the treatment towards these children. Children who receive low scores usually are placed in special classes wher the curriculum involves drill and skill worksheets. They fail to learn what their advantages peers are learning. School personnel often have lower expectations for students placed in lower tracts or remedial classes due to low-test scores. These children are more likely to receive an inferior education and they do not get admission in good colleges (Buell & Kralovec, p. 17-18). Using test results can be harmful to students receiving low scores as well as high scores. The SAT exams are used to identify the academically gifted and talented. Children identified as such as usually given additional material and resources in school. The students who score high on standardized tests show stress-related symptoms and a fear of failure. This heavy emphasis on scores can devalue teacher judgment and seriously affect a student’s self-esteem. Test-induced stress can lead to increased anxiety in all students. Low performing students especially feel that they have already failed, and the test just adds to their feelings of low self-worth. The greatest disservice a formal test can have on a student is the depletion of a student’s self-esteem. Students perceive themselves as failures when they receive labels such as ‘behind’, ‘at-risk’, ‘immature’, and ‘remedial’. Children who do poorly on tests tend to feel poorly about themselves and possess negative images. When students are labeled slow learners because of the SAT exams, their educational opportunity becomes narrowed and unchallenged. These students begin a lifetime of drill and skill worksheets. High portions of these students come from minority groups or special classes. Every test reflects the background of the people who construct the test, who are mostly white, upper to middle class professionals. Most of the experiences they are questioning come from their background leaving out the background of many of the potential test-takers (Heriot & Wonnell, p. 467-483). The SAT exams are also biased in favor of English-fluent pupils only. Many limited English proficient (LEP) students are improperly assessed and decisions about their placement are made incorrectly. Language dominance seems to have a negative effect for students of different cultural backgrounds, and non-English speaking students have trouble with interpretations of test language. Tests are written with complex grammar and oftentimes are hard to understand. As test results are shown, students who are more likely to fail include the disproportionately poor and African American students, which undermine the mission of offering all students an opportunity to learn. Children from low income and minority groups are often harmed for life because of low test scores. The curriculum is ‘dumbed-down’ for these students because the educators feel they cannot handle the regular curriculum. This leads to a boring curriculum for these students (Stahlman, p. 242). Civil rights and parent advocacy groups are challenging that these tests penalize minority and at-risk students who have been short changed education. African Americans and Latinos are usually forced into the bottom tracks solely based on their low test scores. Another negative impact to low-income students is the fact they have not had some of the experience as other students. If children come from affluent families and stimulus-rich environments, they are more apt to score higher on the SAT exams. On of the chief reasons that a student’s socioeconomic status is highly correlated to scores on the SAT exams and college admission is because many questions on the tests measure what is learned outside of school. Some students are offered more experiences than others, thus affecting their scores (Ullman, p. 18). Conclusion Assessment is needed in the public schools that benefit all students and focus on improving learning instead of ranking and labeling students into specific categories. The SAT exams are not perfect or absolute measures of what individual students can or cannot do. For instance, paper-and-pencil tests give teacher only part of the picture of a student’s strengths and weaknesses. A student’s scores on a particular test may also vary from day to day, depending on whether the student guesses, received clear directions, follows the directly carefully, takes the test seriously, and is comfortable in taking the test. School personnel must not limit assessment to the SAT exams or allow them to dominate the assessment. Assessment is definitely multidimensional and must take into consideration multiple measures to evaluate a person’s full capabilities. Without a more inclusive assessment process, those who can contribute to and benefit from society will be forever excluded from the opportunities to do so.
